Storytelling & CBT for Treating Anxiety and OCD: A Strategy for Success

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

ROOM 712

This three-hour didactic session will introduce a series of narrative stories that capture the phenomenological experience of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) as well as other presentations of anxiety, such as Panic Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder. We will employ metaphors to help illustrate and explain the sometimes bizarre, often paradoxical, nature of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the behavioral treatment of choice in addressing these disorders, as well as exploring ways to change one's relationship with fear. In ways that standard didactic practices cannot achieve, the use of narrative metaphors allows participants a fuller phenomenological appreciation of the experience of complex anxiety disorders, and a better comprehension of the rationale and mechanistic underpinnings of ERP. This presentation also features a unique and inventive repackaging of standard CBT practices for the treatment of OCD and other anxiety disorders. Prepare to be entertained, intrigued, and educated in ways you would have not expected, and leave this presentation inspired to utilize this imaginative approach with your clients.
