Creative Mindfulness Training for Healthcare Professionals Treating Trauma

Vicarious traumatization and stress are common risks for counselors and clinicians working in the field. Despite the acknowledgement of these cumulative emotional effects, literature indicates that educational training in regards to self-care and counselor wellness are limited. This paper will introduce the Creative Mindfulness Training (CMT) for professionals involved in treating trauma. The CMT model was created to reduce these associated risks and exposures through the practice of mindfulness techniques. This presentation will examine research on the concept of counselor wellness and the importance of practicing mindfulness in promoting resiliency and wellness.  Based on the hypothesis that increased mindfulness and resilience will result in decreased stress levels, the presentation will explore the efficacy and potential of the Creative Mindfulness Training in reducing secondary traumatization in mental health professionals.
