ROOM 712

The impact of a life-threatening diagnosis and exhausting medical treatment that follows deeply affects an individual’s sense of self, body image, self-esteem, gender identity, social and intimate support system. Whether patients enter a healing trajectory or face an end-of-life phase, certain “life questions” emerge and require attention that is not often easy for patients to verbalize. This paper will address art therapy’s special usefulness as a therapeutic accompaniment to the discreet and changing phases of cancer care. We shall ask the question: what are patient’s therapeutic needs in each phase and how do they shift throughout treatment and beyond? Additionally, what is the value of long-term art therapy in cancer care, and why has this been so little recognized? Through case vignettes, the speaker will examine how art therapy can serve a transformative role during each of the stages of cancer treatment as well as in long-term work with the same patient.
