Waka poetry is a classical Japanese art form that dates back over a millennium. Its formal quality produces a linguistic harmony between explicit naturalism and implicit emotionality, conveying both objective and subjective aspects of the writer's experience. In this daylong Master Class, the presenter will discuss how Waka poetry can serve to promote creative dialogues in therapeutic settings. Participants will learn how to write poetry in the Waka style, while integrating Zen teachings and psychoanalytic notions of reverie and intuition. These exercises are designed to explore the ways in which therapists can unify different aspects of the patient's reality to deepen their experience within the therapeutic encounter.
