Crafts: A Core Component of a Creative Arts Therapist's Toolkit

ROOM 715

Research has shown that the use of crafts by art therapists is an effective treatment modality for patients in crisis. When patients feel helpless and overwhelmed, crafts can help strengthen their sense of mastery and decision-making ability in an institutional setting—hospital, clinic, treatment center, psychiatric ward—that typically impedes exercising control, choice, and creativity. From our experience working with such patients in severe distress, using beading, in particular, can generate even better patient outcomes as a whole than working with traditional arts media. This is because the beading process fosters individual self-expression without the added pressures of insight and/or interpretation. This workshop will challenge preconceived biases towards crafts and, in particular, show how beading can be incorporate as an essential component of any creative arts therapist’s toolkit.
