From Improvisation to Social Awareness: How Psychodrama Benefits People with ASD

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities are characterized as having difficulty with Social Pragmatics, known as 'Mind Blindness'. This half-day workshop will demonstrate how the use of psychodrama, Improvisational Theatre, Sociometry, and Sociodramatic techniques can increase social awareness in ASD individuals. Unlike techniques that make use of social scripts to shape appropriate behavior, psychodrama and improvisation can nurture spontaneity and thus enhance the individual's capacity to read and respond successfully in social situations. Clinical material will be presented to illustrate how these techniques work in both individual and group settings to establish appropriate social relationships. Participants will then have the chance to try out and discuss these action techniques, which they can utilize in their own practice.
