Advances in Trauma Treatment for Children through Drama, Art, and Play

A review of past fundamental trauma models and their influence on current trauma models will be offered, designed for master’s level clinicians. Within this context, the universal challenges of working with traumatized children will be explored through the lens of creative arts therapy. Art therapy, play, and drama therapy demonstrations and experientials will address such topics as: attachment and self-regulation; avoidance and negative projections; good enough safety; developmental sensitivity; gradual exposure and desensitization; parent, guardian, and young client engagement, along with attunement through the creative arts.

Anna Marie Weber, MA, RDT, LCAT, CDVC, is the director of children’s services for the Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center at VIBS. Along with supervising a staff of creative arts therapists, social workers and interns, she specializes in the treatment of children who have witnessed familial homicide and severe sexual abuse cases.
