Professional Credentialing & State Licensure: What Arts Therapists Need to Know

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Registration Professional credentialing is a hallmark of competence, available to practitioners within a profession across the country and even around the world. Every creative arts therapy discipline has a professional organization and/or credentialing body with a similar mission—to protect consumers by credentialing therapists. Board certification indicates to the public that the therapist has been vetted statistically by passing a scientifically produced examination within a nationally accredited certification program. Recertification ensures that therapists continue their education in order to stay up-to-date in their practice.

Licensing gives the expressive therapist the legal right to practice a profession, use a specific title, and protects the public by ensuring minimum standards of competency and holding licensees accountable for their professional practice through a disciplinary system. Licensing is subject to laws specific to each state, and therefore requirements vary from state to state. This presentation will focus on the laws and licensing standards for the state of New York.

During this special presentation geared towards expressive arts therapies students and recent graduates, attendees will participate in an exchange about credentialing and licensing in New York. The speakers will answer frequently asked questions about qualifying for credentials and the difference between professional credentialing and state licensure.
