Movable Books & Pop-Ups: Mechanisms of Meaning

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Interactive books incorporating pop-ups and cut-outs have excellent potential for use in both art education and art therapy settings. Besides being an enjoyable activity, making books can support a broad age/ability range of students and clients in telling their stories and in promoting understanding of self and others. Starting with simple pop-ups, participants will learn quick and easy ways to create interactive paper art, exploring the link between two-dimensional and three-dimensional thinking and providing glimpses of creativity and meaning. Participants will then learn a folding book structure to house the pop-up pages and give the work more of a context. Upon completion, participants will learn a second structure that builds on the first. Participants will also have the opportunity to see examples of the many variations that can be produced based on the simple accordion structure, unlocking the unlimited possibilities for creativity and exploration. This daylong class is suitable for therapists, educators, and others seeking a creative process that offers potential for both intimate reflection and psychological distance. Also, it promises to be a lot of fun!
