Whether faced with the end of one's own life, or grieving the death of another's, our experiences during these emotionally heightened times are hard to put into words. Artmaking and the creative process have helped many people express feelings of grief and loss, explore existential experiences and questions, and find relief despite the challenges of these situations. In this paper session, the speaker will illustrate how art therapy has helped hospice patients, their families, and bereaved others. We will explore the benefits that expressive therapists can bring to working in hospice and bereavement services, including the unique role they hold within a hospice team—particularly when working with families.


Rebecca Jacobson, MA, ATR

Rebecca Jacobson, MA, ATR, completed her master's in art therapy in December, 2012. In 2011, she helped introduce art therapy to the Bokamoso Youth Center in Winterveldt, South Africa. Rebecca has contributed to two South African art-based studies as a qualitative researcher and expert in South African art.
