West African Drumming in Groups: Promoting Community & Healing

West African drumming is an ancient art that uses rhythm and group interaction to promote community and healing. In this experiential daylong Master Class, participants will learn the basic structure of a therapeutic drumming session and practice how to lead simple warm-up activities with drums and found percussion items. The presenter will share neurological research that demonstrate the benefits of drumming, and will also discuss the cultural history of West African drumming and teach traditional rhythms. By highlighting its uses in traditional rites of passage rituals, participants will gain insight into how group drumming can have therapeutic applications for adolescents, including those growing up in Western cultures.


Tom Harris, MS

Tom Harris, MS, has been working with adolescents and families in distress since 1978. In 1996 he developed a therapeutic drumming program based on traditional West African drumming, to be used at a residential treatment center with children and youth with significant mental health and behavioral challenges.
