Engaging Resistant Adolescents in Art Therapy

Growing pains come with increasing insecurities and self-conscious frustrations that can cause adolescents to resist engagement in any sort of honest self-expression. As expressive arts therapists with clinical responsibilities, the potential for frustration is great. But if we think back to our own years as adolescents, we might get a glimpse into the dynamics with which we are faced. This paper will explore the art of engaging resistant adolescent clients. Through the examination of literature, case studies, and our own collective personal experiences, participants will learn directives and techniques that can help them circumvent unnecessary struggles and discover ways to identify and make use of personal resistance, transference, and counter-transference in working with non-compliant clients who claim they "just can't draw."
