The Self-Book©: A Creative Intervention for Reducing Distress During Cancer Treatment

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

ROOM 712

The Self-Book© project was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. It features a six-session intervention of five self-related directives, using precut collage materials, which are assembled to create a small, highly visual book. The Self-Book© intervention is currently being studied in a randomized clinical trial at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia; its subjects are female patients with breast cancer. Each participant in this study is asked to report her level of emotional distress and psychological well-being at designated time points over a 16-week period. Later, they are encouraged to keep their finished Self-Book© to use as a transitional object. Summit workshop participants will have the opportunity to practice Self-Book© directives, as well as discuss how this effective tool can be used with a variety of clients in other clinical contexts.
