Using Play Therapy to Help Children Who Have Sexual Behavior Problems

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

ROOM 809

The Boundary Project, a research-informed assessment and treatment program that offers a comprehensive, family-based approach for helping children with sexual behavior problems is introduced in this three-hour didactic session. We will explore play therapy strategies that can be applied in both assessment and treatment of young children, and provide a context for responding to sexually abusive youth in a purposeful way. Emphasis will be placed on decreasing high-risk behaviors; motivating parents and caretakers to provide careful supervision; and engaging these children in their own treatment. Using this approach, they can learn to identify and master their internal controls, regulate their affect, and understand their unique cues of impending problem behaviors. A variety of play therapy techniques and strategies designed for children to use with their caregivers will be discussed, along with mindfulness and CBT-based treatment strategies.
