Paste Paper & Suminagashi Marbling Techniques: Decorative Expression

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Long before ebooks, at the end of the day, bookbinders would pigment their leftover paste and brush it onto paper. They would use their brushes and other tools to draw and/or comb patterns and designs into the paste. Thanks to the thickness of the paste, a three-dimensional surface is left on the paper once it dries. This process became known as paste paper, and can be both fun and expressive for people of all ages and abilities. Suminagashi is an Asian technique of marbling paper with inks. Getting started is as simple as dipping a paint brush in the ink and touching it to the surface of a tray of water. Lay a sheet of paper on the surface of the water to transfer the ink onto the paper, and you've got a talent-independent, ego-enhancing product that's functional, frameable, and fun. In this daylong Master Class, you'll learn to make and teach both of these processes so you can incorporate them at work upon your return.
