ROOM 702

The mandala is a circular configuration, a spiritual symbol that represents the universal realm in Buddhist and Hindu cultures. This half-day workshop will explore the theoretical and practical issues concerning the integration of art therapy, body psychotherapy and ecopsychology in the creative process of mandala-making. A brief overview of the cultural practices of mandala-making will be provided, followed by an introduction to various theoretical concepts and approaches including general systems theory, body psychotherapy, and ecopsychology to define the emerging field of eco-art therapy and to understand both clinical and non-clinical applications of mandala-making. The symbolic geometry of the mandala, as well as other natural circular forms will be considered from the eco-art therapeutic perspective. Participants will engage in an expressive, body-centered ritualized activity to concentrate on the connection between atmospheric/environmental and inner processes while creating mandalas using ecological materials.
