Therapeutic Dance & Yoga-Based Movement for Special Needs

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

ROOM 710

Based on principles of dance/movement therapy and yoga, we will explore the basic tenets of Dance For All (DFA), a creative, therapeutic program for adolescents and adults with special needs that is easily adaptable to younger populations. After an introduction to the DFA philosophy, (that special needs is an extension of universal global needs and behavior is communication), participants will experience, discuss, and practice the basic format of a therapeutic class, creating a ritual with a beginning, middle, and end. Participants will learn specific, practical and playful tools for raising and grounding energy while establishing group cohesion. They will learn and experience the concept of teaching as a structured improvisation, creating a lesson plan that invites and empowers creativity for both the leader and the student. All of this, while exploring the power of creative self expression through movement for social, emotional and cognitive learning. Neither dance nor yoga experience is required.
