Neurobiology 101 for Expressive Arts Therapists

Current research is continuing to make connections between the brain and behavior and the intersection of neurology and mental health, making it increasingly important for expressive therapists to have an understanding of basic neurobiological principles and functions. However, delving into the world of neurology can be daunting. This workshop will use metaphor, experientials, and activities that engage various brain regions to develop an understanding of neurological anatomy and functions. Brain regions engaged through the expressive therapies will be discussed through the use of movement and the five senses. Participants will have the opportunity to learn through fun interactive activities making this essential topic approachable—and relatable—to professionals in all expressive arts therapies disciplines. 


Dawn Burau, MA, LMHC, SpEd

Dawn Burau, LMHC, SpEd, is adjunct faculty at Lesley University in the Graduate School of Expressive Therapy and, over the last 10 years, has worked as a therapeutic teacher at the Community Therapeutic Day School and has consulted to both public and private schools.
