Combining Artistic Training & Expressive Therapies: Nurturing Adolescents, Developing Artists

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

ROOM 703

This workshop introduces a specific system for integrating fine arts training and clinical treatment goals when working with adolescents. Inherent in receiving artistic training and developing artistic skills involves nurturing capacity for emotional regulation, empathy, social interaction, concentration, delayed gratification, tolerance for complexity, aesthetic awareness, discernment, and more. This integrated approach, focused on a student's self-discovery and development of character, allows multiple treatment goals to be pursued at once, but requires a shift in paradigms, terminology, and approaches from traditional clinical approaches. Further benefit comes as artistic training allows students to see themselves as emerging artists with processes available to them to productively explore, question, and comment on themselves and the world as they experience it. Increased artistic skill enables more precise and rich expression, which greatly serves the therapeutic process. Attendees will also be invited to engage in series of artistic exercises that demonstrate the approach.
